These restricted bands of tissue behind the upper lip and/or underneath the tongue can make eating, speaking, breathing, and enjoying life much harder for children and adults alike. Fortunately, there is a solution Dr. Pitarra can use: lip and tongue-tie treatment, or a frenectomy. How Do Lip and Tongue-Ties Develop?
Lip and tongue ties typically form while a baby is still in the womb. When the tissue located behind the upper lip or beneath the tongue does not develop correctly, it can result in a thick band that prevents greater movement after birth.
Oftentimes, infants with lip and tongue ties struggle to breastfeed or take a bottle and become fussy. They may have difficulty gaining weight and experience colic or acid reflux.
However, this problem may not arise until they reach childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
Why Is It Important to Treat Lip & Tongue-Ties?
Failing to address a lip or tongue-tie can lead to serious problems for children and adults, including:
- Difficulty breathing throughout the night
- Speech delays/impediments
- Acid reflux and other similar digestive issues
- Difficulty pushing solid foods to the back of the mouth
- Teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism)
- Gapped teeth that increase the risk of gum disease and decay
- Lower self-confidence because of gapped teeth caused by a lip-tie
Lip & Tongue-Tie Treatment
The most effective method for releasing these banded tissues is a frenectomy. Using a soft tissue laser, Dr. Pitarra can safely and effectively lacerate the lip or tongue-tie so that it is no longer attached. The benefits of this method are many:
- Reduced bleeding and swelling
- Little to no discomfort
- Faster recovery
- Immediate cauterization
- Reduced risk of post-procedural infection
With the soft tissue laser, Dr. Pitarra does not need to use scalpels or sutures, which means you or your child can expect to heal much faster than with traditional methods.
